Missouri-based nicole genz, the owner of a small business in kirkwood, has been raising money on facebook as part of the viral "venmo challenge," promising her followers that she'd give every penny to a st. Louis server, KMOX news reported. The venmo challenge, meanwhile, has grown in popularity amid the pandemic on tiktok, where users raising money to disperse to the hard-hit restaurant community, usually in the form of a very generous tip.

Genz, who owns a furniture store, first posted about the challenge on new year's eve with a goal of raising $1,000. But since then, she’s reportedly collected more than $4,000.
After gathering the initial funds, genz first surprised a waitress who "could not have been more appreciative." but when she went to saffron indian cuisine with $2,021, intending to give it to the server, he politely refused.
"I cannot take it. I really appreciate your donation, but … it’s too much for me," the waiter said in a video genz posted. "some places they need this money more than us," the waiter said. "I really appreciate your support," he added.
Genz then tells him she hopes he and the restaurant get "10 times more support" after her followers see the video.
"thank you," the server replied.
It was unclear whether the server heard in the video was also an owner of the restaurant, though he did indicate that he had been with the establishment since its opening in 2007.
In any case, genz said she'd use the money to surprise another deserving restaurant worker in st. Louis.
"we own a small business and we know what it’s been like through this whole pandemic, which is why we’re trying to crowdsource our followers to do something good for a stranger we don’t know," ganz said.

Servers at six boston restaurants were surprised wednesday night after receiving massive tips — $2,021, to be exact.
At each restaurant, the cash came in an envelope signed by a familiar name: auto magnate and philanthropist ernie boch jr.
“you don’t have to go to restaurants to know that they’re struggling,” the boch enterprises CEO told boston.Com friday. “I love bars, but I don’t go to them that often, so I called up my friend, [radio personality] greg hill. I called him on tuesday, and I said, greg are you busy wednesday? I said, I’ll pick you up at 6 p.M. I have a secret mission.”
Boch, hill, and another friend visited six restaurants together on tuesday evening, including J.J. Foley’s cafe, lincoln tavern & restaurant, loretta’s last call, the corner tavern, stats bar & grille, and the hub pub, leaving envelopes filled with $2,021 in cash at each one.
At each place, boch said the friends ordered a drink and some food, got the bill, and, when the server wasn’t looking, placed the envelope on the table and immediately left.
At loretta’s last call in the fenway, general manager myles kopka told boston.Com that the server who found the envelope was shocked.
“what she told me was that she cleaned the table, and when she cleaned the table she saw the signed receipt and she was like, oh, that’s cool, he left a good tip,” kopka said. “and there was an envelope on the table as well and she was kind of confused. She looked at it and was really, really shocked.”
Kopka told boston.Com that the server and the entire staff is grateful for boch’s actions, and that it enhances morale overall.
“as I always tell them, you never know who you’re waiting on, so you want to give the best service you can possibly give,” kopka said. “you never know what you’re going to get in return.”
On thursday night, boch donated $1 million to the barstool fund, a fund created by barstool sports in support of small businesses affected by COVID-19. The philanthropist said he identifies with the businesses that the fund aims to help.
“my company started as a small business in 1938,” he said. “I’m third generation. My grandfather started this business as a gas station on route 1. … small businesses and family businesses are the backbone of this economy. And we have to support them.”
Wednesday’s events weren’t the first time boch has left a generous tip at a restaurant. In february 2020, boch left $5,000 for a server at seaglass restaurant in salisbury, a response to donnie wahlberg’s “2020 challenge.” boch said he encourages people to be generous at restaurants when they can.
“please tip your server,” he said. “don’t be afraid to go to [restaurants]; they’re extremely clean, extremely safe. Support the small businesses.”

Here’s proof 2021 will be a better year for bars in boston.
A generous tipper handed out $2,021 to the wait staff at six different establishments wednesday night in what’s being hailed as a much-needed shot of goodwill.
“it’s a ray of sunshine in this storm and an inspiration to others,” doug bacon, president of red paint hospitality group, said of the tips that add up to more than $12,000.
His young server was the recipient of a $2,021 tip at the corner tavern on marlborough street. Bacon said the phased reopening orders from the baker administration and shutdowns during the pandemic has the left the industry reeling.
“it’s worse than anyone can imagine. People in the industry are just getting by. But this brings hope,” said bacon, who owns eight restaurants and bars in boston. “there are good things coming on the horizon.”
Corner tavern server conor gallivan, 29, said the tip was “overwhelming” and he immediately used it to pay off a few bills.
“it was just a random wednesday night in a year like this and that tip was stunning,” gallivan said. “it’s an absolute blessing.”
Many restaurants and bars have been closed for good or gone into hibernation waiting for the vaccine rollout while other owners are just trying to survive on take-out business and limited dining inside and outside.
Ernie boch jr. Admitted to the herald — after a reporter tracked him down — that he was the champion tipper.
The music-loving car magnate said he feels bad for businesses just trying to keep the door open, so he dug deep into his own pockets.
“it’s just so outrageous what’s happening,” boch said. “so many stores are just gone. Shuttered. I just want to try to do my part.”
He’s also challenging bostonians to do whatever they can to tip and frequent their favorite restaurants. “if you can do it, do it!” he added.
Boch is a philanthropist who is comfortable in front of the camera. This time, he just wanted to have a good meal and a drink with friends and leave a helluva tip. And repeat it. His generosity is beginning to make the rounds on social media, so we called him up.
“the tip,” gallivan said, “gives us all hope. A lot of people, especially with take out, have been tipping. Everything lately just wears you down, but this is heartwarming.”
He’s hoping for the day when everybody knows your name again at your favorite boston bar.

Mystery customer who dropped $2,021 tips at boston bars revealed
Boston bartender conor gallivan got a wicked awesome new year's surprise wednesday night when a customer left him an envelope of cash as a tip.
"it's one of the most mind-blowing things that's happened to me in 10 years of doing this," gallivan said.
"I was trying to figure out for a second whether if that was what was intended, and then you realize, he left $2,021 for 2021, it was pretty clear symbolism," gallivan said. "I basically got a month's rent in a tip."
The corner tavern was one of six local bars where the mystery tipper dropped some big cash.
Thursday night, his identity was revealed.
"my mission that night was to support the local bars," ernie boch, jr. Says.
Boch is known for his cars and his philanthropy.
"I don't get takeout that often, but when I do, I can just see the problems that are there," boch says. "I encourage anyone who can do it, please, support the industry."
Thursday night, boch donated $1 million to the barstool sports restaurant fund set up to help small businesses.
Gallivan says he'll use his tip to pay his bills and pay down the debt he's incurred just trying to stay afloat.
"it gives you hope that we're turning the corner and we're kind of on the back nine of this, and hopefully can get back to normal soon," gallivan says.

BOSTON (WPRI) — last week, massachusetts gov. Charlie baker extended the 25% capacity limit at restaurants for another two weeks, causing more strain on local businesses.
But wednesday night, six establishments in the boston area got an added boost of money, and hope, from a prominent figure in the community.
Remember the 2020 tip challenge? A waitress at the harvest market in swansea was the recipient of a mystery tip of $2,020, but that challenge came to an end once the pandemic hit.
However, a new year means a new challenge. Car magnate and philanthropist ernie boch jr. Filled six mysterious envelopes with $2,021 in cash and left them on tables at six restaurants.
“I usually cook,” boch said. “I don’t get takeout that often, but when I do, I can just see the problems that are there, and I encourage anybody that can do it, please support the industry.”
Boch and a friend decided to discretely enjoy their time at each of the restaurants and leave the envelope of cash next to the receipt before leaving.
“one of the most mind-boggling things that’s happened to me in the 10 years of doing this,” bartender conor gallivan said.
Gallivan works at corner tavern in boston, one of the restaurants boch visited, and said the money will pay his rent for a month.
Boch didn’t stop at the generous tips. He took the challenge to another level by announcing a $1 million donation to a restaurant fund set up to help small businesses.

For massachusetts auto magnate ernie boch jr., 2021 has gotten off to a charitable start.
The businessman-philanthropist, who has in years past been named one of the top 50 richest people in the state, is credited with handing out six $2,021 tips to servers at half a dozen restaurants in boston this week, news outlets reported.
The cash was left in mysterious envelopes with the car dealer’s well-known name written on them. The words “thank you” were also included, WHDH reported.
“it was so dead that I had this idea, why don’t I go into boston and hit all these different bars and give some support,” boch told the news outlet.
Boch’s generous tips come as restaurants and other businesses across the state and the world continue to suffer the economic woes of the coronavirus pandemic, with the service industry taking a particularly hard hit.
On thursday, massachusetts gov. Charlie baker and lt. Gov. Karyn polito visited ristorante saraceno, a 35-year-old italian eatery located in the north end of boston. The restaurant is one of 1,595 small businesses in the commonwealth receiving funds from a $78.5 million state grant program.
The state dollars aim to help small businesses survive the next few months of the public health crisis as people wait for the COVID-19 vaccine to rollout, according to baker.
”the difficulties associated with what many small businesses and especially those in the hospitality and entertainment business have gone through because of the pandemic and all that came with it is profound,” the governor noted thursday.
According to WHDH, boch was disheartened by how many restaurants are struggling during the coronavirus pandemic, so much so that he and a friend organized what resembled a pub crawl wednesday night.
They agreed to go to six different restaurants in roughly three hours, enjoy the service and leave after dropping off a $2,021 tip, the news outlet reported.
Among the restaurants boch left a sizable tip at was loretta’s last call in fenway park, according to WHDH’s reporting.
“she was shocked,” the restaurant’s general manager, myles kopka, told WHDH about one of his servers. “she saw the signed copy of the receipt, and it was whatever, and then she saw the envelope next to it, and she was definitely shocked.”
Another restaurant boch stopped at was the corner tavern, where server conner gallivan was also surprised to find an envelope with $2,021 in mainly hundred-dollar bills, NECN reported.
“sometimes it’s just difficult to get through shift to shift, and something like last night, well, it makes it easier,” gallivan told the news outlet.
This is not the first time boch has left a multi-thousand-dollar tip at a massachusetts restaurant. In february of last year, before the pandemic started, he dropped a whopping $5,000 tip at seaglass restaurant and lounge in salisbury, boston 25 reported. His bill was only around $160.
The businessman had apparently been inspired by the generous acts of singer-songwriter, actor and dorchester native donnie wahlberg, who has made headlines for his charitable tips.
In november, the wahlberg brother left a $2,020 tip on a $35 lunch tab at the marshland restaurants and bakery in sandwich on cape cod. He wrote at the bottom of the receipt, “#2020tipchallenge.”
The boston native also dropped another $2,020 tip in january 2020 on a $76.45 bill at an IHOP in st. Charles, illinois, urging others to participate in the challenge.

Boch said he hopes that others who have the means will be inspired to do the same.
“the people that are serving are struggling, the bars are struggling. It’s a difficult environment. So if you can, you should,” he said.

On friday, miami squeeze posted a picture of the $2,021 tip on instagram, thanking the customer for her generosity.
"last year was a tough year for everyone so we’re so grateful to be able to start this new year like this," the juice bar captioned the photo, in part.
According to the picture, the customer left the huge tip on a $71.84 order, with a handwritten note at the top wishing the juice bar a happy new year.

Kelly amar, the daughter of the juice bar’s owners, told the miami herald that the customer -- who asked to stay anonymous -- orders from miami squeeze a couple of times a week.
"we were not expecting this at all," amar told the newspaper. "we said, ‘are you sure?’ she said ‘yes, thank you. I love this place, I’m so happy to do this for you.’ it was a really special moment."
Amar told the herald that the woman asked that the tip to be split among staff, which meant each of the 22 employees received about $92 each.
"she just wanted to say thank you to us because as you know this past year has been very hectic," amar told the herald. "this was her way of giving back and this really helps us because this has been a really hard year for all of us. It’s a great thank you for all of us."

Known as the "2020 tip challenge" the tipping trend quickly gained momentum as celebrities like donnie wahlberg, harry styles and tom selleck continued spreading kindness and money during the year—which happened to come during one of the hardest times for the restaurant industry.
With the hospitality and restaurant industry still struggling due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 tip challenged evolved into the "2021 just be nice challenge," which encourages people with the financial means to give away $2,021 to local businesses.
Miami squeeze, a family-owned juice bar and restaurant in north miami beach, was one of the first places to benefit from the feel-good challenge. A regular diner at the establishment left a $2,021 tip on her $71.84 bill with a note saying "happy new year. Always love coming here."
"we can't even begin to express how thankful and humbled we are for our amazing customers who have kept us in business," miami squeeze wrote in a post, along with a photo of the receipt, on their instagram page. "last year was a tough year for everyone so we're so grateful to be able to start this new year like this. At miami squeeze we want you to see us as part of your family, the squeeze family. We are so blessed to have guests like these, who go above and beyond to support our small local business."
Other restaurants across the U.S. Have also been recipients of the tipping challenge. According to vail daily, a family of three left a $2,021 tip on a $300 tab at vin48 in avon, colorado.
"they left $1,100 for the kitchen, and $900 for the front of the house," collin baugh, vin48 co-owner told vail daily. "and they wrote, 'great vibe and great service. Happy new year!'"
Big tip: customer leaves $2,021 gratuity on new year’s day order at florida juice bar
NORTH MIAMI BEACH, fla. — A customer at a south florida juice bar gave its workers a great start to 2021.
A woman walked into miami squeeze on friday and ordered breakfast and some to-go items. The bill for three avocado toasts with eggs and three smoothies was $71.84, but the customer added a $2,021 tip, the miami herald reported.
The woman left a note on the bill that read, “happy new year! Always love coming here.”
The tip was enough to give each of miami squeeze’s 22 employees $100.
“that is the biggest tip we’ve ever gotten by far,” kelly amar, 23, whose parents have owned and operated miami squeeze for about 35 years, told the herald. “this blows out anything we’ve ever gotten.”
Miami squeeze posted the receipt on their instagram page friday afternoon.
Amar said the tipper comes to miami squeeze once or twice a week, the herald reported. The woman requested anonymity, but stressed the tip should be spread among all employees.
“we were not expecting this at all,” amar told the newspaper. “we said, ‘are you sure?’ she said, ‘yes, thank you. I love this place, I’m so happy to do this for you.’ it was a really special moment.”
The restaurant felt the economic squeeze because of the coronavirus pandemic and was forced to lay off several workers, the herald reported. Those workers have since been brought back as business picked up, and the staff was thrilled to receive the generous tip and note to start off the new year.
“the community is our business,” the juice bar’s manager, julian salgado, told WSVN. “if there’s no community, then we can’t stay open, and we’re very thankful to have all these great clients of ours, that became family at this point.”
